Difficulty:

Simple

Prerequisites:

AWS Account

A good idea for a domain

A little bit of money (approx. 8 to 60 USD per year, depending on the domain you chose)

How to:

Go to aws console and login with an IAM User with appropriate rights

Go to service Route 53

Choose your domain name. Check out the docs for details on which domains are available at AWS Route 53 and which properties the domains have (like data protection). For example, .de domains can only registered for 1 year and you have no data protection features.

Type in the contact details for the registration.

Decide, if domain shall automatically be renewed, accept the Terms and Conditions and complete the order.

After this you will receive a few E-Mails telling you what to do next. The Domains are pending at first, but normally are registered within few minutes. Keep in mind, that this can also take some days in single cases.

Conclusion

AWS can sometimes be a bit more expensive than some offers of other domain providers. But I like it, because it has a few less pain points in the long run, if you are using a lot of other AWS stuff anyway. See the Route 53 feature list for more information.
